On March 26, 2025, 10 members of the Bonneville Fly Fishers gathered in the Legacy Bridge access area in Midway, Utah. The morning was comfortably (unseasonally) warm, the sun was shining, sandhill cranes, geese and myriad songbirds were calling. The only fly in the ointment was the Central Utah Water Conservancy District, which had increased water releases from Jordanelle Dam from 130 cfs to 300 cfs just two days before. The intrepid group of fly fishers flailed the waters nonetheless. A few fish were caught, all on nymphs weighted to cut through the increased flow, as well as lots of willow sticks, freshly relocated by the surge. The increased flow and possible lower water temperature seemed to suppress insect hatches and fish rise activity. Anglers explored other access areas, including River Road South, Cottonwood and Jordanelle Dam in the afternoon, all with similar results. New members were met, names were learned and commiserations shared. Another attempt is scheduled for this fall.
